As an introduction to myself and to Vibrant Health and Healing. I want to tell a bit of my story concerning functional health and why I do what I do. I am a licensed midwife and love midwifery. I love working with families and being able to speak into people’s lives at such an important time of transition and joy. My favorite part of midwifery is…most people guess the babies, but actually it is the moms. I love helping to solve problems and figure out answers. At the moment I'm not even delivering babies. You might ask why when I love it and the answer has to do with what I'm doing now and why I believe in Functional Health.
My journey into functional health started with my own health. Along with loving my job as a midwife, I love to travel and love adventure. In December of 2013 I combined these three and accepted an invitation to work at a birth center in Tacobon, Philippines for a couple of weeks. I was part of a disaster relief team after Typhoon Yolanda. While there, though I did not know it at the time, I picked up a parasite that proceeded to destroy my intestinal lining and my health. In January I jumped back into working at a busy midwifery practice. Soon I was thinking “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I am so fatigued. I just have to make it to the end of May and vacation.” My mom says I don't know how to not be in school, so in May I started a functional nutrition course. I did not know it, but this was setting me up to help myself with my own journey. With summer, my health continued to deteriorate, to where by August my body ached all over constantly, I got my first migraine headache, and I was so fatigued all the time all I wanted was to lay on the couch and cry. Even though I was exhausted I constantly woke up in the middle of the night and could not sleep. I was eating great-- no sugar and no grains and still continued to feel worse. I was about to start an internship as well as still doing midwifery and all I wanted was to go home to my mom and cry! I told my mom, “I don’t want to die, but I cannot live like this.” Because I believe that health is holistic, spirit, soul and body I believe God heard my cry and answered me in what I was already learning about functional health. I used some of the labs and discovered the culprit, a parasite, which destroyed my mucosal lining, wrecked my adrenals and caused a whole host of issues. I also consulted with an amazing natural doctor who helped guide me, along with my course, using detoxing and nutrition to heal my body. It was not overnight but it was progressive.
We are told health is about eating good and exercise and I say that is important but often health is determined by underlying factors that are causing stress in our body. We need to dig deeper and find the root. If I had not done this I would have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and medicated and likely still be sick today.
When I first learned about functional nutrition I went wow that is what I do as a midwife only on a much broader scale. It is being a health detective and helping people solve their health issues by finding the underlying problem and empowering them to fix it with nutrition and lifestyle. So today I get to help dig deeper into fertility issues and digestive issues and find the root of what is going on so the body can function the way is was designed to.
