Newsflash! The Most Important Factor In Increasing Your Fertility…
What would you say if I told you one simple lifestyle change would increase your fertility rate by 40%? It’s true! Changing your diet to a Mediterranean style diet will increase your fertility.
One of the largest studies on fertility was done in the Netherlands on women going through in vitro fertilization. What they discovered is that women who eat a diet closer to a Mediterranean style diet before IVF had a 40% higher chance of becoming pregnant. An outline of the Mediterranean style diet would be one high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, lean proteins (eg. Fish), and low glycemic index carbohydrates.
Breaking it down a little further, the best fertility is among those who:
- Eat mostly monounsaturated fatty acids. A simple way to spot this is oils that typically are liquid at room temperature and get solid when chilled. So think butter- my favorite kind is Kerry Gold. Olive oil is another example of monounsaturated fat.
- More vegetable protein than animal protein. I was mind blown when I learned that according to Dr. Robbins all of the following foods are complete proteins: almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, bean sprouts, dates, coconuts, bananas, tomatoes, okra, squash, alfalfa sprouts, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, eggplant. spirolina, blue green algae.
- Eat mostly low glycemic index (GI) carbohydrates. The glycemic index is a measure of how much the carbohydrates in a food raise your blood sugar. Low GI foods are considered those that raise it 55 points or less out of 100.
- Eat a full fat dairy diet. Good Fats are those from wild caught sea food (not farmed or farm raised), organic olive oil (for eating, not cooking), and organic coconut oil or ghee for cooking. Avocados, walnuts, almonds, organic flax seed all contain good fats.
A Mediterranean diet contains high levels of folate and B vitamins found in fish, dairy, eggs, and meat. It is also high in antioxidants from the fruits and vegetables. And it keeps the blood sugars level with the emphasis on low glycemic index’s carbohydrates. These may be the main reasons for increased fertility. Whatever reason,. it's a pretty delicious way wait to eat.
As an aside a Danish study showed that women who have a little wine (on average a couple drinks a week) get pregnant faster, but this was not true of other alcoholic beverages.
So raise your wine glasses to eating Mediterranean style and increasing your fertility rate.
